DATA ANALYSIS WORKSHOP: Understanding the Nature of Avatar-Mediated Interaction in MMOGs
Robert Moore Nicolas Ducheneaut, Eric Nickell & Nicholas Yee
Marjee Chmiel, Chair

A new medium:
MMOs as a new media in social interaction
- coumputer-mediate
- distributed
- graphical (3D objects and environments)
- Metahpor : Face to face interacion

What is this medium like?

Analyzing conversations under a microscope

Using recordings of naturally occurring..

How is talk managed in turn –by – turn?

What information do bodies give off?

How are proximity and orientation used?

What kinds of gestures do people do?
Stand alone, referential, emphatic, descriptive

Facial expressions?

How do MOG players use: Text chat,
non-verbal cucues,
gaze proximity and boydy torque
Gestures
Facial expression
Text emotes

To achive:

A sense of co-presence
Joint focus of attention
Tight coordination
Mutual understanding

MMOGs and LearningL

What types of learning could they support
What not?
How could they be adapted for education?

He’s done screen capture video data with 10 video clips on 6 different games
Meetings:

SWG
WOW
Second Life

Learning
There –chat circle etiquestte
Star wars galaxies – pets
EQII – harvesting and selling
EQOA – pulling
EQII – Guard trick
EQOA - power leveling
WOW – guild training raid

(watched a lot of video clips)

What did we notice?

It’s slow
Can’t tell the difference from programmed idle behavior and intentional behavior
Ability of experienced players to “parse” the data in a way that quickly makes sense
Mechanics of the different environments.. you read the visual cueus and respond to them differently based on the system
- eg, second life lets you know that someone is typing, warcraft doesn’t
- the method by which you communicate dedicates how you communicate
o SL’s balloons vs. WoW orders of text
- switiching between say and tell chatting in a random way, why?
Debriefing after a wipe, how do you process the info?
